Harvest PTA gives back

The PTA could use your help with manning the booths and donating items for the silent auction gift baskets. Each grade is going to have boxes in their classrooms for donations. If you’d like to donate items, drop them off at the appropriate classroom.
Themes:
Kindergarten: Outdoor activities/toys (ex-chalk, balls, jump ropes)
1st grade: Children’s books (Scholastic book orders might be a great place to find some of these)
2nd grade: Movie night (ex-movies, popcorn)
3rd grade: Children’s toys (ex-Littlest Pet Shop, Matchbox Cars, Puzzles, Coloring books)
4th grade: Game night (ex-Puzzles, Card Games, Board Games)
5th grade: Christmas theme (ex-advent calendar, decorations, cards)
6th grade: Chocolate (ex-gift certificates, anything chocolate really)

These are all just suggestions. Feel free to be creative and if you have a different theme you’d like to create a basket for to donate we’d love to have that too. Thank you for your support of Harvest Elementary PTA.

What do we get with all those Campbell's labels? We recently were able to "buy" 2 5-gallon water coolers to add to our school emergency supplies, as well as jumpropes, balls, and a portable PA system for our PE class. Thanks to all those parents who submit those labels. Every label gets us closer to needed classroom supplies. Thanks for supporting this program. Congrats to Sra. McDowell's 3rd grade class who finished first in the Box Tops contest for September with 346 Box Tops! Donut Date Update

At today's meeting, it was decided that we will keep the current budget and Donut Date program for this year. The responses have been overwhelmingly positive towards the program and the way it is being run. We are grateful for the PTA volunteers who are running this program well.

We will conduct a needs assessment to continue to insure that our budgets and programs reflect the desires of the parents at our school. {The budget this year IS based on a current needs assessment.}

We appreciate everyone who has a passion for PTA and has let that shine over the last few days.

Donut Dates Concerns

Last night, at our first General Membership Meeting of the Year, the subject of Donut Dates came up.

Donut Dates are an opportunity for each classroom to have the parents of the children come in during school hours and read with their child. The PTA provides a donut for both the child and parent. It is once a year, per classroom, for 15 minutes.

There were two parts of the concern voiced:
1. Not every child has a parent who is willing or able to come to the school for the 15 minute date, and that situation may create sad feelings for the children without parents who come in. I was approached by several teachers after our meeting last night who commented on this, and there were some suggestions about asking our local police, firemen, army staff, etc. come in to help with the children who don't have parents. We can certainly look into that if we decide to keep the program running this year.

2. Cost of donuts. The Donut Date program is part of the Family Life Commission, and they have a current annual budget of $1800, down from $2350 from last year. To be clear, NOT all of that money is spent on donuts, their commission sponsors THREE main things:
a. Family Week in November {you may remember this week from the last few years-- the keystone event of the week was when families were invited to the school to watch a movie},
b. the Birthday Table {each child is invited to have a small piece of cake and juice during lunch. The Family Life Commissioner is planning on saving money this year by serving water instead of juice}, and
c. the Donut Dates.

The Family Life Budget is currently $1800, about 4.69% of the total PTA budget for the year.

Some additional things that have been brought up to consider:

Donut Dates are not the only school function where children are invited to have a family participant to come to the school- the 5th grade maturation program and the 1st grade grandparents day that would also fit into that category.

The goal of the Donut Date program is to provide a fun activity where the parents are invited into the classroom, can see the environment there, how the teacher interacts with students, and see who their children are buddies with. Parents have expressed support for the program citing those benefits.

As your PTA board, we want to be sure that the programs we are funding are meeting the needs of the families at our school!! Please weigh in on this issue and help us get a feel for how the PTA general membership at our school feels. We will be in further discussions about this Tuesday morning at our 9:30 am board meeting, and we welcome you there. Our meetings are held in the teacher's lounge.

Back To School Night

Back to school night is on Thursday, September 2 at 5:00-7:00pm. The PTA will start off the evening from 5:00-5:30 in the multi-purpose room. After the PTA presentation there will be three 20 minute sessions for you to meet with your children's teachers.
We will be serving dinner at Back To School night. Pizza, chips, and a choice of capri sun or water bottle for $2. Come support our PTA!

Secretary-takes notes for all board and executive board meetings, distributes board meeting minutes, keeps contact lists for all PTA board members.

Treasurer-follow all PTA guidelines in maintaining PTA funds, distributing reimbursement checks, keeping current budgets.

Family Life Commissioner-oversees reading “donut dates,” birthday table, family game night, family week, and Parent Resource Center.

Safety and Welfare Commissioner-oversees school emergency supplies, Safety Fair, Green Ribbon Month, school emergency kits, works with the school to coordinate fire and earthquake drills.

Community Involvement Commissioner- coordinates monthly school newsletter and book fairs.

Communication Commissioner-seeks to keep parents informed about school events through the school blog and social networking.

Education Commissioner- maintains and staffs Take Home Reading Library, assists with Knowledge Bowl and other educational pursuits as supported by the school.

Fundraising Commissioner-seeks to raise funds for the PTA through various activities such as the walk-a-thon, family portraits, t-shirt sales, and other activities as approved by the PTA President.

Health Commissioner-oversees Red and Purple Ribbon Week.

In an effort to empower our children to make good decisions and help themselves, we are celebrating Red Ribbon Week and Purple Ribbon Week simultaneously. Please take some time to discuss the relevant issues that these ribbons represent. The red ribbon represents a person's strength to abstain from harmful substances such as drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and inappropriate use of legal medications. 2009 Harvest Elementary Family Portrait Fundraiser

The PTA at Harvest has hired Legacy Studios to come to the Harvest Elementary to take family pictures. Legacy will be at the school during November and December. Legacy is only charging a $25 sitting fee for a 20 minute session. With that fee you get a free 11 x 14 mounted print of your choice (no limit on the amount of people who can be in the picture).

Additionally, you may elect to purchase a CD with the all of the pictures taken during the session (including a photo release) for only $75.

Arctic Circle!

As you all know, we held the Jazz Read-A-Thon in January/February. There were many incentives and prizes that the students could win by turning in their minutes but the top prize was awarded to the student in each class who read the most minutes. This prize was the chance to go to lunch with Mr. Bowman and Mr. Brunner at Arctic Circle. Check out the pictures from their "excursion"! Looks like they had a lot of fun! ROC-Remembering Our Culture!

Each month the students at Harvest Elementary work on a different character trait and if they do well they earn a reward. Luckily, the students did a fabulous job in February and earned an assembly! Way to go!! Mr. Bowman found an incredible group called ROC and invited them to our school to perform for the kids. They were amazing! The kids loved every minute of it and even learned how to say hello in several different languages! ROC showed the kids how we can all unite through song and dance and that by learning from others we learn more about ourselves. Check out the video and see what your kids came home talking about! :)

Brandon Mull Comes to our School!!

On Monday, January 26th, Brandon Mull, author of the Fablehaven series came to our school! The weather was horrible that day so he arrived late but took it all in stride and did a fabulous job! He showed the kids how to use their imaginations and even had a few of the kids "tell" their own story with a little help! The kids really enjoyed what he had to share. He even stayed to sign books! Thanks Mr. Mull!

T-Shirts and Hoodies

There have been a lot of phone calls and questions about t-shirts and hoodies. We received the November/December order back from the vendor on December 19, 2008. Just in time to send home before the Christmas vacation. Unfortunately, the WHOLE order was wrong. :( We called the vendor and let him know. He is working to get it re-done. He did not give us an exact date but I am hoping that they will be done by no later than the end of next week. We are incredibly sorry about the inconvenience. Great Incentives for Jazz Read-A-Thon!!

We have many fun incentives (subject to change) planned for students who return their tracking sheets and for those who read the most minutes.

Students:

-Turn in tracking sheet= small treat

-Turn in tracking sheet on the Monday it is due= small treat and a ticket to enter into a drawing.*

-Most minutes read each week (one student per grade) =wear a Jazz jersey on Friday and then entered to win the jersey in a drawing at the end of the contest.

-Overall top reader (one student per class)= Principals lunch to Arctic Circle

-Class with the most minutes read each week (one class per grade)= a trophy to keep in the class during the week.

-Class with the overall most minutes read (includes all grades)= pizza party

-1 Million minutes read by February 9th (1/2 way)= School wide no homework day and no tests the next day (will be on Wednesday February 11th )

*Drawing- Each week the students who return their tracking sheet on time will be given a ticket to enter into a drawing. In the office we will have 6 different prize options. They will need to make sure to write their name on the ticket and put it in the container for the prize they’d like to win. This will continue each week during the contest. The students are free to pick a different prize each week or they can try for the same prize. You are welcome to take your class by the office on the way to or from their specialty classes. During the assembly on March 3 we will draw the winners.

Drawing prizes (subject to change): Build a Bear, Boondocks, movie pack, game pack, Jump on It, and a Scott Layden basketball clinic (this is what the Jazz offered instead of game tickets).

In addition, the students can help their teachers earn prizes:

-Teacher with highest per student reading minutes= Extra FREE Day off

-Class with the most minutes read each week (1 per grade)= 30 minutes extra prep time (we will coordinate with you and find a volunteer to sit in your class during the time of your choice)

-Teacher with the highest percentage of sheets turned in each week (one per grade)= ticket to enter into a drawing for either a readers gift pack or a movie gift pack. This is similar to the student drawing and will also be awarded during the assembly.

Utah Jazz Read-A-Thon!

As a PTA we have chosen to participate in the Utah Jazz/Scholastic Book Fairs “Be a Team Player-Read” contest. A Jazz player appearance is a fun way to motivate but the main goal is to get the students to read more. Our goal is to read 2 million minutes during the month long contest. That amounts to approximately 60 minutes per student a day. As competition is steep, this may or may not be enough to win. They are awarding 10 player appearances to the top 10 schools. Ice cream parties and autographed basketballs will be awarded to the schools placing 11-20.

Important dates:

Wednesday January 21- Kick Off Assembly 1:15 (am kindergarten tbd)
*Notes & 1st tracking form in Wednesday folder.*

Friday January 23- Contest Begins

Monday February 23- Contest Ends-last day to collect reading forms

Tuesday March 3- Celebration Assembly-player appearance (hopefully), awards, etc. 1:00ish

*Rules:*
·To count, reading must be done out of school.
·May include time a parent/guardian/older sibling reads aloud to the student.
·Parent/guardian signature required for each reading slip
·Books on tape, storytellers, cereal boxes, traffic signs, music, movie subtitles, teacher and parent personal reading minutes, being read to on the bus and any reading during the school day are NOT acceptable.

Be sure to send your student's *signed reading tracking sheet* back every *MONDAY* (or Tuesday if we are out of school). The first tracking sheet needs to be returned on Tuesday FEBRUARY 3RD. If your student is absent or you just forget to send it in on time, be sure to turn it in at anytime until the February 23rd deadline. We want to make sure that we count every minute read. . Extra sheets are in the office.

Brandon Mull

Brandon Mull, author of the Fablehaven series, is coming to Harvest Elementary, on Monday, January 26, 2009. The assembly starts at 9:15 and is for 3rd-6th graders. Brandon will be there 20 minutes early to sign books! We are so excited for him to come and promote literacy and to share his message that "Imagination Can Take You Places". If you have not had a chance to read the Fablehaven books, now is the time to do it. You definately do not want to pass up these books. They are fabulous! He also authored the book "The Candy Shop War". We appreciate Brandon for his willingness to take time to come to our school. Watch for the 4th book of the Fablehaven series, due out March 24, 2009! Family Week

We have some incredible board members this year which is why our Family Week was such a big hit! Tara Howard and Melissa Starkey are our Family Life Commissioners. They put on a wonderful Family Week. The students were sent home a different activity to do with their families each night and then we topped it off with a "KUNG FU PANDA" movie night that Friday. We thought we were very well prepared with pre-popped popcorn but there was such a great turnout, we had a hard time keeping up with popcorn and drinks! We also had a prize drawing at the end of the movie. We were able to give away DVD's, Thanksgiving Point passes, Activity CD's and many, many other fun prizes! Thank you to all who came and supported our Family Night! It wouldn't have been a success without you!

Reflections

A big THANK YOU to Kristie Hepworth and Gretchen Hepworth for the fabulous job they did with our reflections this year. Reflections is definately a big undertaking but you would have never known that by the way Kristie and Gretchen handled it all. We had some incredible entries by students of all ages and some great judges! The awards night had a great turn out and each student who entered received a medal. Don't worry if you missed this year! Relfections is done each year by the PTA!

Safety Fair!

Thanks to Sabina Suggs and Marci Bargeron for an incredible Safety Fair this year! We had a great turn out and a lot of great feed back! We had a fire engine, ambulance, firehouse, C.E.R.T., ident-a-kid, window safety, and many other participants! The K-9 unit also showed us how police dogs really work! Wow! Don't forget all the yummy food! Not only did we have hot dogs and chips available, C.E.R.T. provided baked goods! Yum! Many of our teachers also came to support us! Thanks to all who volunteered to make this year's safety fair a huge success!

Harvest Elementary Orchestra and Chorus!

Harvest Elementary is again excited to offer an orchestra and choir for our students this year! Last year was a huge success and all the students had a great time (while learning to play an instrument and to sing harmony)!
We have an incredible new music teacher this year by the name of Sandy Cox. Many of your students have already had the privilege of having her for their specialty class this term. She has expressed how excited she is to keep these programs running and can't wait to get started!
She is very talented musically and will do an amazing job as our orchestra and choir director! Don't forget to sign up your student(s) to experience all that our Harvest Elementary orchestra and choir have to offer!

6th Grade Barbecue!!

The 6th graders (and their teachers and parents!) planned a barbecue for today! Parents were asked for donations to help with supplies, food, etc. and to donate their time to help make it a huge success! Mr. Christofferson and his class provided the music. The 6th graders provided the entertainment :) including the chicken dance, the macarena, YMCA and lots of others. (See top picture!)
There were so many parent volunteers that we were able to count at least 30 volunteer hours! Wow! Dad's came with grills to help cook and mom's were there to help everything run smoothly!
There were a lot of different activies going on so everyone had something to participate in! Some sat around and talked, others played soccer, others danced (even one of our dads)!! We won't name any names but he was just as great as the kids!
The food was great thanks to the donations from the parents and to the careful planning from our incredible 6th grade team! The barbecue was a huge success and a tradition that I am told will continue on!

Teacher Appreciation Week

Our breakfast last year for the faculty was a blast! Kerri Ann, Emily, Leslie, and a million others did a fabulous job! They had picked a movie star theme and even created a "red carpet" for our incredible faculty to walk down! There were also paparazzi roaming around driving everybody crazy! I guess that's what they do best! Everyone involved definately went all out to let our teachers know that they are all "oscar" winners in our book!

Our New Blog

Hey all!

Well, here it is. Our new blog! Yahoo! A lot of work stills needs to be done but it is at least a start. I am still trying to figure it all out! I actually considered myself pretty computer savy until I decided to do this blog. Ahhhhh! Now I don't know what to think of my computer skills! :) I am always open to suggestions from all you "bloggers"!

I am hoping to be able to post activites and volunteer opportunites for our school when they are available! Who knows if anyone will use it but it is definately worth a try! Our #1 goal is to see how many parents we can get involved with their child's education! We will see how it goes!
